Grade 5 & 6

Collaborative work is an integral part of this process where students gain confidence through group work.

Grade 5 & 6

In Grades 5 and 6, there is a greater focus on students taking ownership and responsibility of their own learning as they refine their learning skills and become more independent thinkers.

In this division, there is a greater focus on the application of skills learned in the primary grades, coupled with co-creating learning goals and success criteria, and using varying tools and methods of assessment. Beautiful work is created when both teacher and peer feedback is given to improve learning.

Collaborative work is an integral part of this process where students gain confidence through group work. Opportunities to enhance leadership skills are encouraged through participation in chapel and assemblies. Students can also mix with their peers through active participation in intramurals at lunch recess.

GR. 6 TEACHER (BA, BED, OCT)

I always knew I wanted to be a teacher. God affirmed this passion as I grew and made it clear that I would serve Him in this vocation in a Christian school. I love being able to integrate God and His creation into my lessons, and having Him be the centre of what happens in my classroom. The most rewarding part of teaching for me is the relationships that develop with my students. I enjoy learning who they have been created to be, and to challenge them to develop their characteristics they’ve been designed with. I love relearning things through their eyes.

Jenny Bakker

SERT, VICE-PRINCIPAL & GR. 5 TEACHER

God has blessed me with a deep passion for teaching and instilling a love for learning in every child. I have a strong desire to see every child succeed. In order to do this, I am continually learning through reading, professional development training and working towards a Master’s Degree in Developmental Reading. I have had the opportunity to teach many different ages and in many different places. I spent three years teaching High School students and adults in Romania, two and half years teaching University of Waterloo students English at Conestoga College, and have taught Kindergarten and Grade 1/2 students here at OCS. God has been very present in my life wherever he has led me over the years, and I continue to see him working in me here at OCS. It is a privilege to be able to share my love for the Lord with the children I interact with every day. Every child that I come in contact with is loved, valued and cherished by the Lord and deserves to be given every opportunity to succeed!
