Grandpals
Grandpals is a program that the grades 5 and 6 students participate in every other year. Â
Our students are partnered with a senior citizen from a local retirement centre. They meet for eight weeks, and over the course of this time, the students interview their grandpal about their life. Â
The interviews are focused on areas like childhood, adolescence, marriage etc. The visits culminate in a celebration where the grandpals are presented with a biography of their life that the students have written. Â The visit is spent playing card games, reading the biography together and sharing snacks.
This program enhances student writing due to the authentic audience who is receiving the gift. It also breaks down stereotypes that students may have to the aged, and that seniors may have towards preteens. Â
